Today the average lifespan for someone living in the United States is
78 years old. While this is a respectable age to live, you should be
able to live 100 years and beyond, be independent, and continue to enjoy
a good lifestyle
An acquaintance recently remarked "I have accomplished all of my goals - - my children are grown, my retirement plan has allowed me to visit everywhere I wanted to, and I don't have anything else that I want to do." I think that is a bad outlook on life. Also, I have often noticed that couples whose lives are so closely intertwined and who are emotionally dependent upon each other that when one dies, the other seems to die quickly afterwards. This is another instance of the other person not having anything else to live for. Again, this is a bad outlook on life.
A more beneficial outlook on life is one that throughout your life, you can continue to grow and be productive. The society needs the wisdom of someone who has lived for multiple decades and has confronted the challenges of life, overcame them, learned from them, and became a better person. If you are someone who have kept your brain sharp, kept engaged with life, managed stress effectively, and maintained your body in good shape, then you should expect to live 100 years and beyond and enjoy a good lifestyle.
Fundamentally, there are three basic areas you need to focus upon:
1. Acquiring and maintaining a happy and healthy mental attitude
2. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including getting adequate exercise and sleep
3. And, choosing a health promoting diet and adding additional vitamin supplements, if necessary
Let's take a closer look at these three areas. An attitude can best be defined as a state of mind or viewpoint regarding some matter. The matter here is your longevity. If you want to live to 100 and beyond you must believe that you are capable of doing so and want to do so.
In that you constantly choose your behaviors throughout life, you have the freedom to choose either a healthy lifestyle or an unhealthy one. Exercising, getting adequate sleep, and implementing healthy habits are the fundamental of a healthy lifestyle. If you are either severely overweight or severely underweight, you will have the shortest lifespan. If your weight is just below the average weight for your height, you are on the road to having the longest life span. Sleep at least six hours a night, eliminate smoking, drink only in moderation, (and if so, drink red wine), and quit consuming unhealthy fast foods. Keep in mind that researchers estimate that for every hour of exercise, there is a two hour increase in your longevity.
Diets which emphasize a high intake of vegetables and fruits are essential to a life extension program due to its high content of vitamins, minerals, fiber, beta-carotene, and flavonoids.
Foods that are rich in beta-carotene and flavonoids, appear to prevent the development of the diseases, such as cancer, hypertension, and diabetes, that can accelerate the aging process. For beta-carotene, put emphasis on green leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, and carrots. For flavonoids, put emphasis on citrus fruits, berries, onions, parsley, legumes, green tea, and red wine.
Pay close attention to reducing your consumption of saturated fats, cholesterol, sugar, and animal proteins. And finally, take a daily vitamin supplement to make sure you get at least the daily requirements of vitamin C, E, and D. If you do this and maintain healthy satisfying relationships, you can decelerate the aging process and should expect to live a healthy 100 years and beyond.
